Where do I start?

I was going to write a lot about our hand made furniture, but then I thought, "Let it speak for itself". You'll find most of our range in all its glory on one of the following pages:

  • Melbourne Showroom
  • Sydney Showroom
  • Soft Furnishings

But I would like to explain why we use Australian timber for our furniture exclusively.

It is no exaggeration to say that native Australian eucalypts are amongst the hardest timber in the world - they are also one of the most beautiful. Whilst we're extremely familiar with timber from around the world, we champion Australian eucalypts because of their wonderful qualities. We know that these eucalypts are amongst the worlds great woods like Oak, Teak, Mahogany and Walnut.

Much of the wood you see in our timber furniture is River Redgum. I would love to suggest another species that it resembles, for those not familiar with it, but there isn't one. In our humble opinion it's the most beautiful wood of all and no one has disagreed with us yet. The wood we use is from 200 - 500 year old, dead trees and our primary source of supply is private farmland where the timber would otherwise be used for firewood.

Different countries have different preferences for timber, usually and not surprisingly because of what is locally available. Overall however, timber furniture is either blond and mostly pine or dark and mostly Oak, Walnut or Mahogany. All wood goes darker over time, hence the typical appearance of antique furniture. Modern timber furniture is often blond or a light brown pink because it's made from plantation species. Naturally darker timbers are in peril worldwide because they are typically harder and have consequently been over-used for construction and firewood

We generally use darker timbers because they suit our robust styling. Our timber dining tables are incredibly tough and can take an astonishing amount of wear and tear with even the nastiest blows leaving only a trace.

Customers often ask us about what sized dining table is appropriate and because we have placed tables in every conceivable situation, we can give you expert advice on the right size for your needs. Generally, we believe a table should not be wider than 1.2m (4 feet) nor longer than 3.3m (10 feet). This is because most people rarely sit more than ten at a time, and then only occasionally. However, we do make extensions for our tables for use on the rare occasions when you'll need them.

Having said that, it so happens that we are specialists in making enormous tables for huge families and boardrooms. In our Sydney showroom there is a table 7.5m (25 feet) long made from a single tree.
